Food for Travel:  Healthy Eating Diet Plans for Travel

By Suzanne Glover

Preparing food for travel is easy when you combine these tips on healthy eating with ideas for food and travel, etc. In fact, you can use these tips for healthy eating on the go anytime.

When I started traveling weekly around the United States for business, I developed a means of eating healthy on the run because I wasn’t ready to give up my healthy lifestyle (or start gaining weight) because I lived a life “on the go.”

salmon-plate-travelI started to travel with food that was envied by my associates because I’d [instantly] have a full [restaurant style] plate with salmon, broccoli and grains that looked gourmet, yet it came from home thousands of miles away.

It became rather fun too because when people asked, “Where did you get that great-looking food?” I’d answer, “California,” and explain how I packed it for the trip.

I did it simply because there are some great reasons for eating healthy on the run:

travel-stressedCOMBAT TRAVEL STRESS:  When you’re traveling, your mind and body are under greater stress and subjected to a larger arena of germs and viruses, so it’s that much more important to keep your immunity strong by eating healthy. That’s why having a healthy eating planner for traveling is so important.

For me, I had to be at my best, so I had to find a way to keep my stamina up and stay strong despite the travel stress.

HAVE MORE MONEY FOR ACTIVITIES:  When you’re traveling or on the go and are constantly consuming airport and rich restaurant foods, you are spending a lot of extra money that could be used for sight seeing adventures or stress reducing activities such as massage or hot mineral soaks. This gives you money from your travel food budget to spend elsewhere.

Destress with a MassageI became very accustomed to having my gourmet plate of food ready and then spending the rest of my “waiting at the restaurant for the meal to be served” time and money getting a massage.

BE IN CONTROL OF WHEN YOU EAT:  When you’re traveling, you’re “at the mercy” of whatever food you can find, whenever you can find it and this can play havoc with your blood sugar [and your mood]. And if you’re diabetic, this can be disastrous. Instead, by being prepared with healthy food for travel already packed and ready to go, you are in control of what and when you eat – even if you are thousands of miles from home. This is an absolute must-do on the list of healthy eating for diabetics, traveling or not.

It also saves you time because you can stay on the go while nibbling healthy foods all day, even when there may not be any other foods available at the moment. And this is one of the best reasons for eating healthy when traveling because when you can keep nibbling healthy foods all day long, you keep your blood sugar level and that keeps you cool and composed when you run into travel difficulties. (Versus being stranded on the side of the road and having a nervous breakdown because your blood sugar is so low from being hungry.)

You can use this type of healthy eating to lose weight while traveling. I did. In fact, I found it to be one of the best healthy eating diet plans for losing weight because I was outside of my normal environment at home where it was easy to eat out of habit.

Now that we’ve discussed a few of the effects of eating healthy in the realm of food and travel, etc., let’s take a look on the next page at how I prepared my own food for travel…
